Haute Couture SS 2014

10:32 AM

Haute couture consists of secrets whispered from generation to generation. If, in ready-to-wear, a garment is manufactured according to standard sizes, the haute couture garment adapts to any imperfection in order to eliminate it.” – Yves Saint Laurent

Haute Couture, literally high sewing, is the creation of custom-fitted garments sewn by hand using unusual and very expensive fabrics. Not every fashion house is allowed to call itself “haute couture”, since this term is protected by law in France. For any house to call itself haute couture, it has to follow certain rules established by the French Ministry of Industry and the Fédération Française de la Couture.

  1. Create custom, made to measure clothing for private clients, offering them several fittings.

  2. Have a full time workshop in Paris employing no less than 20 people.

  3. Present to the Paris press two collections a year, in January and July, composed by daytime and evening formal wear.

Not every couture piece is made to sell, they’re rather made for the runway as an art exhibition. Couture is extremely expensive and it’s not odd that some pieces might cost millions. People that buy haute couture come usually from Russia, China and the Middle East. Fashion houses don’t really profit from Haute Couture, they might even end up losing money, thus the reason why there aren’t many couturiers.

As you all must know, this week is Haute Couture Fashion Week in Paris. On Sunday Atelier Versace presented the first collection of the season, followed by Schiaparelli, Christian Dior, Giambattista Valli and Alexis Mabille on Monday, Chanel, Stéphane Rolland, Bouchra Jarrar, Alexandre Vauthier, Julien Fournié and Giorgio Armani Privé on Tuesday and Martin  Margiela, Frank Sorbier, Elie Saab, Rad Hourani, Jean Paul Gaultier, Yiqing Yin, Valentino and Viktor&Rolf today.

We still have great designers to see tomorrow, Zuhair Murad, Serkan Cura and Ralph and Russo. But the most important have already shown their collections. Here I show you my favorite pieces of the week.
