Leading a healthy lifestyle is such an important thing that sometimes we take for granted. It doesn't matter what point in the year it is, we always have the perfect excuse to not be healthy. It might be because you're too busy with school or work, because it's the summer and you're going traveling, or it's Christmas and you say "I'll start next Monday" or "New year, new me" and all that load of crap. The point is, there's always going to be that excuse that will keep you from eating healthy food, from exercising and from being an overall healthy person. That's gotta change!
I used to be a super lazy person who hated sports and exercising. I don't know how I managed to change, to be honest, but for the last couple of years I've been working my butt off at the gym. I've hit a couple of speed bumps, though. The last two summers I went to work as a summer camp counselor in New York and I gained so much weight because all I ate was children's food. The first time I was there I ate everything. So many chicken strips, burgers, grilled cheese sandwiches and everything I could get my hands on. When I came back and saw how much weight I had gained, how much my face was breaking out and how much I had messed up all my progress.... I started being healthy again. One year later though, same thing happened. I controlled myself a bit more, but I couldn't help it.
This summer I'm staying home for the first time in so many years and I decided that I will keep all my healthy habits to not throw all my progress in the garbage again.
1. Wake up early
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for staying in bed all day watching Netflix once in a while, even once a week. You can't do this all summer long though! I'm not saying that you shouldn't get your beauty sleep ('cause that's really important too), do sleep 8 hours and wake up around 9 or 10 am if you don't have to be up earlier. You don't want to waste your life staying in bed for three months, do you?
2. Have breakfast
This sounds like such a cliché but, "breakfast is the most important meal of the day". Indeed it is. Having breakfast kicks off your metabolism in the morning, since you haven't eaten anything for around 8 hours. Skipping breakfast won't help you lose weight, on the contrary. So don't skip any meals!
My favorite breakfasts to have for when I'm in a hurry or lazy to cook something more complex are smoothies and overnight oats. Smoothies are amazing because you just put everything in a blender, they give you all the energy you need and will keep you full until lunch time. My favorite smoothie mix includes almond milk, a few strawberries (or any berries really), a banana, 1/2 cup of rolled oats and 1 tbsp of either honey, peanut butter or coconut oil. For overnight oats, there are so many possibilities too. You can look for thousands of recipes on Pinterest. But basically what you have to do is add liquid (I'd go with almond milk or any kind of milk) to a cup of rolled oats and store it in the fridge overnight. In the morning you can put anything on it as a topping and that's it!
3. Sweat it out
Like I said before, I used to hate exercising, I was way too lazy for it. Now, if I don't exercise I feel really bad with myself. I'm not one of those gym obsessed kind of people, but I feel like it does helps me have more energy during the day if I go to the gym. Also, once you start seeing results in your body, working out really becomes a habit.
You don't necessarily have to join a gym to work out. You can go out for a run, swim if you have a pool or even watch videos on youtube to work out at home. My favorite ones are Blogilates, I really recommend them!
4. Drink loads of water
Drinking water is super important for your overall health. Especially during these months when it's so hot outside and you have to stay hydrated. I'm not going to tell you to drink a crazy amount of liters of water during the day, but do drink at least one. And more if you work out.
If it's hard for your to drink plain water, you can try infusing it with fruit like strawberries, lime, oranges, etc. for it to have a flavor. Or you can also try to drink tea. Green tea is great for your metabolism and it has a ton of antioxidants!
5. Wear SPF
I'm not lying when I say I hate SPF. I think it's gross and makes your skin all sticky. I despise it. Wearing it is really important for your skin health, though. It will prevent skin cancer and early wrinkles.
Moisturizing is a must too! I just recently started moisturizing my face after I wash it and I've seen so many changes on it. Break outs suddently stopped. They disappeared. So I'm going to keep moisturizing!
6. Have cheat meals / days
Don't keep yourself from eating anything you want, just mind your portions. Do you want chocolate? Eat a piece, go for it! Just don't eat a whole Hershey's bar in one seating, you know what I mean? Do you want to eat a burger? Eat that too... What I'm saying is don't overdo it. You don't have to eat chocolate, a burger and ten cupcakes all in one day.
7. Occupy yourself
If I'm bored out of my mind at home every single day for the next three months I'm going to lose it. I'm going to watch everything there is on Netflix, twice, and I'm going to eat junk the whole time. So, instead of doing that, I'm going to go find myself a summer job. You can do that, join a class, volunteer in something... anything that keeps you from staying home bored.
What do you think about these tips? How do YOU stay healthy? Any advice you have for me? I'd love to hear it!
